The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) and multi-messenger astrophysics

Description

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation observatory for very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray astrophysics, covering energies from 20 GeV to 300 TeV. The main UK contributions to CTA instrumentation are the cameras for the Small-Sized Telescopes. CTA will be a major contributor to multi-messenger astrophysics. High-energy neutrinos and VHE gamma rays can be produced in relativistic jets where hadrons are accelerated to high energies. In 2017, IceCube detected a neutrino positionally coincident with the blazar TXS 0506+056, which displayed an increased flux of radio, X-ray, and gamma-rays. For the thousands of VHE gamma-ray sources CTA will study, the synergy with other observatories will be key.
