Title: Scalar leptoquarks, baryon number violation and Pati-Salam symmetry
Abstract:
I review how scalars that couple to a quark and a lepton or to two quarks give rise to baryon number violation either via dimension 5 or dimension 4 operators. Such scalars may exist in nature at the TeV scale if these operators are forbidden or suppressed. I summarize the minimal extension of the standard model with Pati-Salam quark-lepton unification. This model contains leptoquark scalars (and gauge bosons). I discuss how the enhanced gauge symmetry prevents baryon number violation from arising from operators with dimension less than six. This works is partly motivated by the some of the observed anomalies in B decays.
