Doug Cowen: Astrophysical Tau Neutrinos

Europe/London
Description

We present the first high-significance measurement by IceCube of the most energetic tau neutrino candidates ever observed. Using convolutional neural networks to improve our selection efficiency while keeping backgrounds low from other astrophysical neutrino flavors, atmospheric neutrinos, and cosmic ray muons, we observed seven tau neutrino candidates on a predicted background of 0.5 events. The measured astrophysical tau neutrino flux is consistent with existing IceCube astrophysical neutrino flux measurements, and with standard neutrino oscillations over cosmological pathlengths.
